The Dragon Boat Festival or Duan Wu Jie 端午节 is on June 18th this year, so don’t miss out on the chance to celebrate it with your family and friends! Here are some easy ways to take part in the holiday’s traditions if you’re in the NYC area:
- Row, row, row your boat
Now is the time to take advantage of New York’s waterways by hopping in a boat with some friends! NYC has plenty of organizations that provide free boating services. For kayaking, check out Downtown Boathouse at Pier 26 on the Hudson River (Saturdays and Sundays 9am-5pm). The Village Community Boathouse at Pier 49 on Houston Street and the Hudson River offers free rowing sessions on Sundays at noon. While these boats won’t be decorated as dragons, challenging your friends to a paddle race is a fun activity for the weekend!
2. Eat delicious zongzi in Chinatown
Zongzi is a traditional Chinese snack made of sticky rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Zongzi can be sweet or savory depending on the filling. Common fillings include mung bean, red bean paste, Chinese sausage, mushrooms, and salted eggs. You can find these “sticky rice dumplings” at Sun Hing Lung Co (58 Henry St.) and at Sun Ming Jan (111 Hester St.) for less than $2! Make sure to buy a bunch of these cheap and delicious treats to share!
For those who don’t want to leave their couch, an easy, non-traditional way to celebrate the festival is to eat some popcorn and watch movies about dragons. Suggestions include:
- How to Train Your Dragon
- Pete’s Dragon
- The Never-ending Story
- Spirited Away
