Hong Kong lawmaker Regina Ip mugged in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve
New People’s Party lawmaker Regina Ip has said that she was mugged in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve while on holiday with her daughter.
She said she was slightly injured on her right shoulder and had bruises on her knees and elbows. She did not lose any belongings.
Ip, 68, said Amsterdam was the last leg of her new year celebration trip, after a visit to London. It was the first time she visited the Dutch city.
She said she and her daughter had been walking in the shopping area, which was quiet at 5pm on Monday, when a man on a motorcycle driving towards her grabbed at her bag but failed to hold on to it.
“I subconsciously held my bag tight and protected myself – although the motorcycle dragged me and I fell to the ground, I still struggled and would not release my hands. The two men realised they failed and fled hastily,” Ip wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
Ip’s daughter helped her up and local residents asked if they needed help. Ip then went back to her hotel to rest.
“I want to remind my friends – be extra careful when you are travelling around a quiet place in Europe,” Ip said, adding that she was already on her way back to Hong Kong.
