Late Mail: NRL punters back Roosters to beat Rabbitohs, free weekend tips

Money talks so the good word in the NRL is that the Sydney Roosters will start 2019 the way they finished 2018.

The defending premiers have got even stronger this season with the addition of Origin forward Angus Crichton and 18-Test veteran Brett Morris.

And the Roosters have been the best-backed side with Ladbrokes ahead of the opening round of the campaign when they take on arch-rival South Sydney at the SCG tonight.”/>

There is three times as much money behind held on the boys from Bondi compared to the Wayne Bennett-coached Bunnies.

Roosters superstar halfback Cooper Cronk has two functioning shoulders again for the recently crowned World Club champions who are $1.60 favourites in head to head betting.

Taking on the North Queensland Cowboys proved to be a profitable betting play last season – they won only three of their six games as home favourites – and Ladbrokes punters are hoping that continues in 2019.

The Cowboys are currently $1.80 favourites to win their season opener in Townsville against the St George Illawarra Dragons, but it is the Red V that have been easily the best-backed side ahead of this contest.

One of the interesting games from a betting perspective is the Sunday afternoon showdown between the Gold Coast Titans and Canberra Raiders.

The market opened at $1.90 apiece, but there has been solid support for the Titans this week and they are set to start just their second game as favourites in the past 12 months.”/>
media_cameraThe Gold Coast Suns are the overwhelming favourite for the wooden spoon.

Ladbrokes bookies are predicting the Q-Clash derbies will be more like a Q-Smash in 2019.

While the Lions are tipped to be a big improver in 2019, the expectations for the Suns could not get much lower.

The over/under win tally for the Suns has been set at 2.5 wins, some 3.5 games adrift of perennial cellar dweller, Carlton.

Coming off their wooden spoon in 2018, the Blues are $9 to make the top eight while the Suns are $41 to see September action.

The Lions are $3.25 to make the eight and $11 to make the top four.

They are $67 to return to the glory days and salute on grand final day at the MCG.

Richmond climbed that mountain just 18 months ago, and are yet again the Ladbrokes fancy at $4.50 to win the 2019 premiership.

The team which conquered the Tigers in last year’s preliminary final, Collingwood, sit on the second line of betting at $6 and have been very well backed to go one better by the Magpies faithful.

West Coast defied expectation to win it all in 2018 and are rated far more seriously by the bookmakers this year, sitting as a $7.50 third favourite.

Melbourne ($8), Essendon ($10), Adelaide ($11), GWS ($13) and Geelong ($17) round out the “top eight” in betting.”/>
media_cameraPerth’s home court advantage looks enough to secure them the championship.

NBL Grand Final

The NBL Grand final is all tied up heading back to Perth for game three tonight, and the home court advantage remains the key factor in betting.

Ladbrokes punters significantly rallied around the home teams last weekend, backing Perth in a landslide in game one and Melbourne United in the same fashion in game two.

Both times, the bookies took a hit.

And it would be a brave punter to say the trend will not continue at RAC Arena over in the west where the Wildcats will start even shorter than last Friday.

Regardless of the result tonight, when the series heads back to Melbourne on Sunday, United could well find itself starting the shortest price of any team this series.”/>

Australian Grand Prix

The F1 season gets underway with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on Sunday and Sebastian Vettel is currently a narrow favourite with Ladbrokes at $2.75.

But there is not much between him and new Ferrari prodigy Charles Leclerc at $3 and defending World Champion Lewis Hamilton at $3.50.

Vettel has won the past two editions of the Australian Grand Prix and was also successful at Albert Park in 2011, while Lewis Hamilton won the race in both 2008 and 2015.

Daniel Ricciardo has made the move from Red Bull Racing to Renault, and the Ladbrokes market suggests that shift has not increased his chances of winning his home race for the first time.

He is currently $81, but as always, there has been plenty of patriotic money for the popular Aussie and he is easily the worst result for the Ladbrokes book.”/>
media_cameraThe Adelaide Crows have moved into flag favouritism in the AFLW.

Adelaide is yet to secure a spot in the AFLW finals but have moved into flag favouritism after thumping the previously undefeated North Melbourne, and then making a similar mess of the Giants last weekend.

Ladbrokes have crunched the Crows into a $2.35 favourite but first they must defeat Melbourne and hope the Kangaroos and Fremantle do not draw.

Should they win – they are a $1.47 favourite against the Demons ($2.65) – they will seal top spot and earn a home preliminary final against the second-placed team from Conference B, which is the significantly weaker pool.

North Melbourne, a $3.50 second elect for the premiership, has been a standout in its maiden season but needs to beat Fremantle to make the finals.

They are a narrow $1.83 favourite against the Dockers ($1.95).”/>
media_cameraAlizee looks good for the All-Star mile.

Best Betting

Alizee has had an ideal preparation for the All-Star Mile and she is ready to peak in her grand final tomorrow. The form coming out of the Expressway Stakes has been extremely strong and she showed her toughness with her victory in the Futurity Stakes. With even luck in running, she will be very tough to beat.

All-Star Mile – Alizee to win @ $3.40

The Gold Coast Titans only started one game as favourite last season and they got the job done, while the Canberra Raiders won only one of their nine games as away underdogs. Taking on the Raiders away from home is always a profitable betting play.

Gold Coast Titans to win @ $1.85

The away side has won the past four games played between these two sides and there is no reason that streak can’t continue. The Brumbies have won only two of their past five games as home favourites and have not looked particularly convincing this season. The Waratahs were tough against the Reds last week and they are over the odds at $2.

Waratahs to win @ $2

The Wellington Phoenix are coming off an 8-2 demolition of the Central Coast Mariners and they are a safe bet to continue their winning ways against the Western Sydney Wanderers. The Phoenix have won all four of their games as home favourites this season, while the Wanderers have won only one of their past nine fixtures as away underdogs.
