Melbourne shooting at Fawkner Park, South Yarra ‘not random’

Police believe a gun attack at an inner-city Melbourne park that left a man dead was not a random shooting.

Forensic police, homicide detectives and SES volunteers spent Saturday combing a popular dog-walking spot, at Fawkner Park in South Yarra, after a 41-year-old Carnegie man was shot dead about 7.40pm on Friday.

Two members of the public found the man on the ground on Friday night and called triple-0, Senior Sergeant Andrew Brady told reporters on Saturday night.

Paramedics arrived at the park and attempted to revive the man with CPR, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Snr Sgt Brady added.

A number of exhibits were collected on Saturday and are currently being processed, he said.

“There’s no evidence to suggest it was a random shooting,” Snr Sgt Brady says.

“We want to reassure the public that Victoria Police is working towards successfully resolving this investigation.”

He added it was concerning such a crime could occur in such a densely populated area.

Police have not confirmed whether they had identified any suspects and could not say what type of gun was used.

It is not known what led to the attack, and the victim has not yet been formally identified.

According to ABC News, residents nearby reported hearing gunshots on Friday night.

Snr Sgt Brady said police couldn’t confirm whether the killing was related to the recent gun death at the Love Machine nightclub at Prahran.

“Investigators need to keep an open mind,” he said.

In a separate incident, an hour earlier on Friday night, another man was stabbed on Romsey Street at Reservoir.

An unknown man in dark clothing had fled the area, police said.

The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now in a serious but stable condition.
