A grand 19th century Wahroonga estate in original condition is on the market with a $3.25 million guide.

The c1898 is one of Wahroonga’s first homes and was originally owned by Sydney-based solicitor George Crichton Smith and his wife Isabella.

They were part of a growing number of Sydney’s upper class at the time who were flocking to Wahroonga because of the country lifestyle it offered away from the city.

At the time of their purchase, the house was located on 1.61ha of what was then known as 66 Burns Rd. It has since been subdivided, with it sitting on 1796 sqm of land and a new address of 69 Braeside St.

A renowned architect at the time, George Leslie Grant crafted the property in a manner that reflected Mr Smith’s Scottish heritage by incorporating elements like the Scottish thistle into the two-storey house.

About 121 years after it was built, the current owners are now selling the property after calling it home for nearly a decade.

“It is a special place to call home, it really is something that you don’t often see,” the vendors said.

While the home features many character elements like marble fireplaces, vaulted Wunderlich ceilings and hardwood floors, the owners said the stained glass windows are one of their favourite features.

“When the stained glass captures the light, it just takes your breath way, it is the most beautiful sight,” the vendors said.

The five-bedroom home features a heavy c1870s championship billiards table, supported by eight brick pylons under the floorboards due to its weight.
