Trainer Tony McEvoy stable expansion to Ballarat

With an eye fixed firmly on his son’s future, Tony McEvoy will expand his training operation to Ballarat.

Determined to retain Flemington and Barossa Valley stables, McEvoy has committed to a 100-box complex at Ballarat’s Dowling Forest.

“It will take a year to build, I’d say,” McEvoy said on Thursday. “The main thing is it’s an extension of my business, it’s not a relocation.

“Adelaide is staying; Flemington is staying.

“But I have to consider the future. Caulfield trainers have been given a timeline to leave.

“That will potentially happen at Flemington one day. I’m in the fortunate position to have (son) Calvin working with me. He is the future.”

McEvoy will continue to train out of Kildalton Park at Angaston and Flemington.

“The facilities we already have are exceptional,” he said.

“I think the facilities at Ballarat are outstanding.

“Track is open to 11am. You haven’t got to be up and working horses at 3am.

“You can take your time in a more relaxed environment.”

Ballarat offers turf and Polytrack surfaces as well as the uphill synthetic track.

McEvoy has secured a site through Ballarat Turf Club.

The South Australian will join Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Archie Alexander, Matt Cumani and a host of other influential trainers at the course.

McEvoy has a strong hand at Saturday’s Goodwood meeting at Morphettville. His 11 runners include Despatch and Cool Passion in the $750,000 feature.
