Woman found dead after Tai Wai flat fire
The blaze started inside a residential unit on the 9th floor of Fung Shing Court at around 4:40am.
Firefighters arrived at the scene soon afterwards and spent about half an hour putting out the fire.
The charred body of a female resident was found inside one of the rooms. A man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s, living in the same flat and believed to be the victim’s parents, were also injured.
Firefighters said around 600 residents were evacuated to safety.
Speaking at a press briefing, the divisional officer of New Territories East, Hung Chung-muk, said the department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
He noted that although the fire hydrant for the block operated normally, there was no water coming out of the fire hose on the affected floor, making it virtually impossible for residents to contain the spread of the flames themselves.
Hung said an investigation will be conducted to find out why the fire hose wasn’t working.
