John Millman, Alex de Minaur give Aussies impressive win over Canada at ATP Cup

Australia has taken another step towards the ATP Cup quarter-finals with a Group F win over Canada at Pat Rafter Arena.

Having disposed of Germany 3-0 on Friday night, the Aussies took an unbeatable 2-0 lead over the Canadians on Sunday thanks to singles win to John Millman and Alex de Minaur.

Hometown Millman has proved a more than capable replacement for the injured Nick Kyrgios, beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4 6-2 to give Australia a 1-0 lead early.

De Minaur completed the task, fighting back from a set and a break down to beat world No.15 Denis Shapovalov 6-7 6-4 6-2.

Australia can clean sweep the Canadians with a win in the doubles.

With Kyrgios hindered by a sore back, Millman answered the call of captain Lleyton Hewitt at Pat Rafter Arena.

“Millmania” was alive and kicking, with the 30-year-old Brisbane product nullifying the power game of Auger-Aliassime, ranked 27 places higher than the Queenslander at number 21.

The win went some way towards exorcising Millman’s Davis Cup demons after he blamed himself for Australia’s quarter-final loss to Canada in November when as a replacement for Kyrgios, he was beaten 7-6 6-4 by Vasek Pospisil.

“You always have to be ready to play. I kind of learned that actually at Davis Cup that you always got to be ready,” Millman said.

“That’s why you put in a really good pre-season. I was really lucky that I got to do a little bit with Alex. He came to Australia nice and early, and I felt like I was pretty prepared.

“It doesn’t get, it’s always difficult, a late call up, but it doesn’t get much easier in a difficult circumstance than when you get to play here in Brisbane, a place where you’re familiar with the court and the surroundings and you know that you’re going to have a vocal crowd in your corner.”.
