THE Oxley Highway is closed between Tamworth and Gunnedah after a serious accident involving multiple cars and a truck on Monday afternoon. Tamworth police confirmed several police cars had been called to the bridge outside of Somerton, on the Oxley Highway, after reports of a crash about 3.45pm. Ambulance NSW and police said crews had reported five cars and a semi-trailer had been involved in the accident, near Appleby Lane. Six ambulances have been deployed to the crash scene with a truck driver, believed to be a man in his late 20s, still trapped in the wreckage.
Paramedics are also treating multiple other patients for minor injuries, the spokesperson said.
Police have blocked the Oxley Highway at Babbinboon Road, and also on the Tamworth side, near Appleby Lane.
There are lengthy delays with the road expected to remain closed for sometime.
Motorists travelling from Gunnedah will need to divert to Rushes Creek Road toward Manilla, police said. Drivers are also being urged to use the Kamilaroi Highway, the RMS warned. Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
