Live large in a low-maintenance modern classic
If you’ve been searching for a family home offering easy access to some of Adelaide’s most renowned schools, this versatile property might tick all the right boxes.
It certainly did for Sri Lankan couple Amali Thilakaratne and husband Buddhika Kariyawasam. They purchased the two-storey Wootoona Tce residence in 2017 so their children, son Anuk and daughter Sanu, could complete their secondary schooling in Adelaide.
Anuk completed Year 12 at St Peter’s College last year, while his sister had attended Seymour College, just a short walk from the family home.
“The location was the key, with Burnside Village really close by, along with great schools such as Seymour,” Anuk says.
He says his parents also liked the contemporary feel of the property, which offers the very best in modern living. Its light-filled open-plan kitchen/living area is a particular stand-out, with bi-fold doors seamlessly integrating into a huge covered outdoor entertaining area, in turn looking out to a low-maintenance rear garden.
“My mum especially likes the modern homes,” Anuk says. “So when you walk in here and you see the doors opening out to the garden – it just adds to the open feel of the home.
“We looked at other places in the area, but we just really liked that house.”
With four bedrooms and a study which can be converted into a fifth bedroom if required, an upstairs living room and a downstairs sitting room, there are plenty of options for family members to stretch out and find their own space if required.
All upstairs bedrooms have a built-in robes, while the expansive main bedroom features a luxurious ensuite – complete with a double vanity and large tub – along with a walk-in robe. A private balcony also provides a tremendous spot to enjoy a morning coffee.
The stylish modern kitchen boasts everything to appeal to would-be MasterChefs, with stainless steel appliances, an island bench and stone benchtops all part of the package. There is also a handy walk-in pantry.
Other storage options are available throughout the home, including two linen cupboards, while the double garage – which features auto-lift doors – opens into the house for added convenience. A gas fireplace and ducted reverse-cycle airconditioning will provide year-round comfort, and a security system will help ensure peace of mind. There is also a rainwater tank.
Anuk says he property offers buyers the chance to simply move in and enjoy it, with no outstanding maintenance issues needing attention. “The landscaping is just how it was when we got it – the garden was perfect then,” he says. “Other than adding a few plants here and there, we haven’t done that much to it.”
With their education journey now taking them to university in Melbourne, the family is moving on – but hope like-minded people might follow in their path at the Wootoona Tce property, with Anuk expecting the home to most likely appeal to “families just like us”.
“If their daughter was to go to Seymour, or any of the other schools that are also really close by, it will be perfect as a family home,” he says. “You’ve got your four bedrooms, a nice backyard, a modern-looking home – it will be perfect for a family, for sure. It’s easy to maintain and nice-looking … it will definitely suit a family.”
As well as Seymour College, other nearby schools include Linden Park, Glen Osmond and Burnside’s primary schools, and Glenunga International High. The first-year commerce student says he will miss the “quiet appeal” of life in St Georges. “It’s much busier in Melbourne and I’ll definitely miss that part of Adelaide,” Anuk says. “It’s just so much calmer.”
