news, latest-news,

WESTS will talk with at least three National Rugby League (NRL) clubs about hosting premierships games in Tamworth post-2020. Organisers for this year’s NRL fixture between the Wests Tigers and the Canberra Raiders have told the Leader tickets are selling fast and it has been one of the most highly anticipated in the event’s short history. Wests Entertainment Group boss Rod Laing was expecting tickets to sell-out for the May 9 fixture. READ MORE: Scully Park has a capacity of 11,000. “The indication from their sales … it’s on track to sell-out,” he said. This is the third and final home game the Wests Tigers have brought to Tamworth as part of its current deal. Mr Laing said the Tigers “have indicated they’re very keen to enter into new discussions”. He said two other NRL clubs had “reached out” as well following the success of the Tamworth games in previous years. The Wests chief executive officer wouldn’t divulge which other clubs had expressed interest. He said Tamworth, and other regional towns, had benefited from the NRL encouraging clubs to take games into country areas. The Tigers played the Newcastle Knights at Scully Park in 2018 and the Gold Coast Titans in 2019. Scully Park has lifted its reputation as a major event venue in NSW in recent years, hosting NRL premiership games and large scale concerts. It will add another feather to its cap in 2020 securing a rare opportunity to host a Super Rugby match as well. The NSW Waratahs will host the Pretoria Bulls in Tamworth on March 21. Mr Laing said interest in the union fixture had been “very encouraging” to date. “We expect a massive crowd, if not, a sell-out,” he said. Mr Laing said it was an unique opportunity and a “one-off” to host a Super Rugby fixture with the competition based in five different countries. “Tickets for the NRL and Super Rugby went on sale in the middle of December, a week a part, and both were going very strong,” he said.
