NFL 2020: Super Bowl, Alex Smith injury, Patrick Mahomes, Ultimate guide, how to watch, start time

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the Super Bowl on the back of their mercurial quarterback Patrick Mahomes but before the 24-year-old wunderkind stepped into big shoes, there was Alex Smith.

Smith started his career with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played seven seasons but only made the playoffs once in 2011.

It was the start of a brief golden run for the 49ers who, under Colin Kaepernick, made the Super Bowl in 2012, with Smith being moved on to the Chiefs.

He spent five years with the Chiefs, reaching the playoffs four more times but the star QB will be remembered more for the man who came next than his own time in Kansas City.

When Patrick Mahomes was picked up in the 2017 Draft, the Chiefs gave him a year to learn the position with Smith taking him under his wing.

It worked with Mahomes the 2018-19 MVP and taking the league by storm.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid gave Smith a big chunk of credit for Mahomes’ instant success.

“How to study, diet, his workout regimen, and how to get family acclimated into the NFL,” Reid said. “Pat couldn’t pay Alex enough for what he taught him.”

Mahomes agreed. The youngster said the pair were still in contact with Smith texting him after the AFC Championship win over the Tennessee Titans.

“It gave me a blueprint, and it was something that helped me out a lot early in my career,” Mahomes said. “Just knowing what film I need to watch on what day and how to go out there and practice the right way.

“He was a huge help of where I am at today, and helping out with learning and making the process quicker for me to develop. He’s helped me be the man that I am.”

But with no place left in Kansas, Smith moved on to the Washington Redskins on a four-year $US84 ($A140m) contract in a move that almost had tragic circumstances.

In a horrific moment, Smith had his leg badly bent under his body as the he was rolled by Texan defenders Kareem Jackson and JJ Watt.

It broke his tibia and fibula and sent him to hospital.

WARNING: Gruesome

It was just the start of a horror ordeal that had Smith fending off amputation and even death after an sepsis infection set in, requiring 17 surgeries to fix.

“I greatly underestimated the complexity of a broken tibia and fibula and how hard they are to heal,” Smith revealed Saturday on ESPN’s Outside The Lines. “I had some unforeseen things happen.”

“I was supposed to get discharged. The initial surgery went great, bone was lined up. I had several plates put in my leg and everything looked great. I was getting ready to go home, it was right before Thanksgiving. That’s when the initial infection was spotted, this is a few days after the surgery. I went septic. It was an infection that had gotten into my blood, and at that point I don’t remember much for a few weeks.

“I had quite a few surgeries in a row. The next thing I remember is waking up several weeks later faced with the decision of amputation or limb salvage at that point.”

He even admitted he could have died with doctors talking about the infection but not understanding what it meant.

After a long battle, the 2005 Draft number one pick now wants to return to the NFL.

“There’s enough there that I can go out there and play,” Smith said. “Knowing that, yeah, failure is a possibility … I need to prove that I can come back and play quarterback in the NFL, and if I can do that, that would be great and it’ll get figured out.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs): There is little to say about this man that hasn’t already been said. Two years into his career, Mahomes has almost done everything that needs to be done. He’s won the MVP, broken a huge chunk of records and left an indelible mark on the NFL. A Super Bowl win — and MVP — would make it one of the greatest first two years in NFL history.

Travis Kelce (Chiefs): For Mahomes to do what he’s done, he needs to have some targets. He has a great one in Kelce. The star tight end has had 97 receptions for 1229 yards this year. He’s also the spiritual leader of the Chiefs and will be the guy to inspire the big plays.

Jimmy G will want more to do in the Super Bowl.pacific.epeak.in/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/1580642686_180_NFL-2020-Super-Bowl-Alex-Smith-injury-Patrick-Mahomes-Ultimate.webp”/>

Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers): The 28-year-old quarterback is often more known for what he does off the field and that will happen when you’re barely sited in a thumping NFC Championship win. But while they don’t necessarily need Garoppolo to pass them to success, however the 49ers offence goes in the Super Bowl, it’ll be a nightmare for the Chiefs defence.

Nick Bosa (49ers): The No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft claimed the AP Defensive Player of the Year and has quickly made himself indispensable for San Fran. The defensive end finished the 2019 NFL season with 47 tackles (16 for loss), 25 quarterback hits, 12 knockdowns, 45 pressures, nine sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two pass deflections and one interception. Expect him to be hunting for Mahomes all Super Bowl long.

HALF-TIME ENTERTAINMENT

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are set to be the halftime entertainment at the Super Bowl with both performers set for their first performances during the event.

The pair held a press conference earlier in the week with part of the performance set to be dedicated to Kobe Bryant.

“Life is so fragile,” Shakira told reporters. “And that’s why we have to live every moment as intensely as we can. And I think we’ll all be remembering Kobe on Sunday. And we’ll be celebrating life and celebrating diversity in this country. I’m sure he’ll be very proud to see the message that we’re going to try to convey onstage.”

There are also bound to be special guests.

Demi Lovato will sing the national anthem before the game.

SUPER BOWL ODDS

TAB have the Chiefs as the favourites but it’s close with the line just 1.5.
